So Jung, a shy Korean girl, faces abuse and neglect at home, including being falsely accused of theft by her stepmother. Teased at school and struggling with her own self-confidence, she is encouraged by her teacher to enter a school poetry contest. As So Jung writes and performs her poetry, she meets an eccentric vagrant who helps her face her fears. Through this process, she learns that her fears, symbolized by "paper tigers," are often illusions. By the end, she finds her voice, gains confidence, and is ready to face her future with newfound strength.
